Meet the Fam
we aren't perfect, but we're a pretty fun family
Mike (by Ashley)
Mike was born and raised in St. George, Utah. From what his family has shared of his childhood, as a kid he was sociable, silly, and determined. He’s one of six kids, he has 3 older siblings, and twin younger brothers. In high school his love for baseball grew deep. As the catcher during his senior year season, he and his team went on to win the state championship. Baseball helped him find his 5 best friends, all of whom are still really good friends to this day. He lived in South America for two years, in the country of Chile, where he learned to speak Spanish fluently (he still speaks it every day at work!), and served as a missionary for our church. Mike completed his Bachelors of Science Degree, and went on to fulfill his lifelong dream of going to medical school. As I watched him go through school, study for 12 hours a day, take countless tests, trudge through hard rotations, I grew a deep appreciation for his qualities of determination and commitment. When he was a resident, I saw him beat down and exhausted, but at the same exact time I saw him fulfilled and excited about the knowledge he was receiving. I’ll never be able to fully express with words my admiration for his work ethic and for his ability to fight through difficult challenges. Even today, as a practicing Anesthesiologist and Chief of Anesthesia at his hospital, he still faces difficult situations, and every single time, he rises to the occasion. One of the things I love most about him, though, is how much he loves his family. Mike has a very close relationship with his siblings, and I love the relationship and friendship he’s developed with my siblings over the years, it means so much to me. He’s a good son and checks in on his parents often. He’s a reeeally good uncle and makes sure his nieces and nephews know how much he loves them. People love the guy. At work, at church, friends, family, everyone really likes being around him. Sometimes I get a little jealous and want all his attention to myself! Ha! But, he always makes sure I know I’m his #1 priority and he’s constantly reminding me how much he loves me and appreciates me. I know how much he loves me, but, my favorite thing about him is how much he loves our children. He finds ways to make time for them, to play with them, to be silly with them, to snuggle them. If there’s one thing our children know through and through, it’s that their daddy loves them. They love to visit him at work, to blow out his birthday candles, to crawl all over him, to joke around with him. They adore him and ask me about 50 times a day “when will daddy be home?”! Mike’s favorite time of the day is the kid’s bedtime. Not because the kids are finally going to sleep, but because he gets that one on one time to read to them, chat about their day, and snuggle them to sleep. He once told me “I know some people think it’s ridiculous how long it takes to put our kids to bed, but one day when they are grown and out of the house, I know I’ll never say ‘man, I wish I wouldn’t have spent so much time putting them to bed at night.’ I know it will be one of my favorite memories to look back on as a parent, putting my kids to bed every night.”One last favorite thing about Mike, is his love for God. He’s grateful to a loving Heavenly Father who has guided him through his life and who blesses his life daily. I can’t believe I was so lucky to steal this guy’s heart. I admire him, I respect him, and I love him. He’s my best friend on the face of this planet and I’m so happy he’s the one I get to live my life with.
Ashley (by Mike)
Ashley was born in California and is the second of three kids. She has an older and younger brother, as well as two loving parents who love and care about her. I mention these things because her family helped shape much of who she is today. Ashley embraces the warm weathered California blood that flows within her. She loves Disneyland, the beach and her family, as a good Californian should. She grew up in a very loving home where she was taught how to work hard and the value honesty and kindness. This helped her graduate high school and later earn her bachelors degree in English Literature. She had plans to be a high school teacher, but decided she wanted to be a stay at home mom once we started our family. She’s developed a passion for all things interior design and I’m so proud of her for starting classes to learn more about the topic that will help her grow her natural talent and passions. Some of her favorite things to do on a day to day basis are morning walks with the kids, volunteering in the kid’s classrooms, working on her own schoolwork, exercising, cuddling the kids, and family dinners out to eat with her parents. But there is so much more to Ashley than her daily schedule. As I have gotten to know many of Ashley’s friends, there has been a common theme as to what kind of person she is seen as. She is the person everyone loves to be around because she laughs at even the worst of jokes which she continues on the daily with me. She is also selfless and has the best listening ear. She has a great capacity for empathy which has earned her life-long and close friends. She excelled as a soccer and volleyball player in middle and high school. This taught her valuable traits like teamwork and working for a common good. The day I met Ashley she had lost her voice and had a hard time getting out many words. Although it took several days for her voice to come back, in those couple days her aura and actions spoke volumes. To say I was immediately awestruck with Ashley is an understatement. Within knowing Ashley for a week, I knew she would be the wife, partner and best friend I always wanted. After I somehow convinced her I was worth spending her life with, she began the long road to arrive where we are now. Ashley put me through almost a decade of training and schooling. Throughout the process she was the person that lifted me when I was down and encouraged me when I felt hopeless. It’s just in her. She does the same for our family as we try to navigate life and its crazy curveballs we constantly see. Ashley has inspired me to be better in all aspects of my life. She continues to strive to be better. She is already such an amazing mother to our children. I think the opportunity to share what a blessing she is with others via this adoption process is a must. I’ve yet to meet a person who doesn’t love Ashley or love to be in her presence. She’s easy to talk to, makes you immediately feel valued, and is there to encourage you if you need it. Describing her through typing could never do justice to show who Ashley is. She truly is my best friend, the most amazing mom, and my favorite person.
This girl. If you know her, you know she has a heart of pure gold. She is so intuitive and perceptive. Talented; she loves to sing, dance, play the piano, do arts and crafts, and loves playing tennis, swimming, and riding her bike. Tries so hard to be and do good. She’s a people person and very social. She wants the people around her to be happy and is very sensitive to the feelings in a room. Quite literally the best big sister in the world. She loves her younger siblings so much and will do anything to help them and to make them laugh. We couldn’t have asked for a sweeter, sillier, happier first born .
There is something so undeniably sweet about this girl. From the time she was a little baby, there has always been a special twinkle in her eye that warms your soul. Unlike her sister who goes out of her way to make people laugh, she is low-key funny, very subtle but absolutely hilarious. She’s extremely smart and tries to keep up with her big sis when it comes to learning the piano, reading, riding her bike, dance class, playing soccer and basketball, basically everything. She has an innate tendency to nurture and wants to take care of the things and the people she loves. She takes such great care of her little bro and waits for her big sis to wake up every morning so they can play. Her snuggles are the best and perfectly illustrate who she is; loving and tender.
The well rounded little guy. He’s always so happy and a ray of sunshine every time he walks into the room. We can’t believe how coordinated he is, he would live on his scooter if we let him. For sure the little brother, he tries his hardest to do everything his big sisters do. He loves to swim, attempts to play whatever sports his big sisters are playing, he loves to have books read to him, he loves the trampoline, and is my best little vegetable eater (but he’s also the fruit snack king!). Kisses and squeezes (hugs) are given to only his favorite people and he’s a total guy’s guy. We all adore this busy body toddler!
